Some people have commented on how to go about leveling a table saw top. This can mean either one of 2 things. Your table saws actual top is warped or the saw is just not in a level position.

Let us look at both of these remarks.

Having a warped table saw top is no laughing matter. I have myself experienced this with some of the entry level table saws. The machined top is maybe not of such durable material when they manufactured it and can distort (or come out of the box like this). I have also noted that on some occasions I have seen that people when not using the saw, cover the table top with an assortment of other goods (using it as a workbench). I know our garages are sometimes cluttered but this is not advisable as the machine was not made for this. Try the manufacturer for a replacement part, if not get yourself a decent table saw that will last and has a good manufactured top, Bosch 4100 09 table saw.

Leveling a table saw top if it is just not sitting right is fairly straightforward. I use my saw on various locations and it has a fixed table stand without wheels. All that I do is try to get it on the most level or secure surface as possible, preferably on a concrete or brick surface, and I check the table top with a spirit level. If it is out or the table rocks a bit I use pieces of cardboard or thin timber sections to “pack” the stand where necessary to level it and secure it from rocking while in use. If the adjustment you have to make is to large then you do not have it on a level enough surface and this can be dangerous.

Anyway these are just some tips that I can give on leveling a table saw top. If you have any further info that the readers can use please comment on this post below. Thanks.

In this post I just want to talk about some of the safety aspects when using ones table saw.

Safe table saw use

The table saw has always been a cause of many work related injuries. However the saw is not always to blame for these injuries. What I mean by this is sure the saw did the damage to whatever has been injured but in many cases it was due to the person whom was using the machine. Now this is just my opinion. Feel free to comment on your experiences at the end of this post.

Safe table saw use is actually just staying focused on what you are doing and using your head (Thinking straight), I have seen accidents where people have only themselves to blame as they operated the machine in an unsafe manner, was intoxicated when using the machine (not very clever) and removed any of the safety features the machine had in place.

Ok the last point I made can be debated because I myself have had a couple of close calls when using the table saw but I removed the blade guard and a couple of other things because my table saw’s safety features were preventing me from actually cutting the timber in the first place. The saw was an entry level Ryobi with stand. Now I am not blaming Ryobi for quality as you get what you pay for. The point I am trying to make is there is a reason one spends the extra bit of money and buy yourself a decent power saw with decent safety features, like the Bosch 4100 09 table saw. The Bosch’s safety mechanisms work great and do not hinder your ability to operate the machine. Hence you are actually doing yourself a favor by avoiding any unsafe operating procedures. This alone goes a great way for safe table saw use.

Another thing I want to mention is that people get over confident when operating power saws, actually power tools in general. You may have used it so often you feel you can do it with your eyes closed (that would be daft as well ) but accidents happen so quickly you need to stay focused on what you are doing. Stand in the correct manner firmly footed, make sure the machine is level and there are no obstructions for you during your cut. Another thing is if the timber is very large you are trying to rip and you cannot control every aspect of the cut yourself then please get someone to help you. You are either going to mess up your cut or you are going to damage yourself or your saw.

Anyway this is just a few tips on safe table saw use from the top of my head and the experiences I have had. Feel free to post your comments on your experiences below or share any further tips that you have.

Many carpenters thoroughly believe in the using of their worm-drive circular saws for various applications. The Skil HD5860 is a popular choice if you are looking for a 8-1/4inch worm drive saw.

Worm Drive Circular saws have their blades on the left hand side of the unit unlike standard circular saws which are on the right side. The difference is with the blade positioned on the left it is much easier to view the cut while making the cut in the material. So no need to lean over the saw twisting your arms etc… to view the line you are cutting on when you use a circular saw.

The Skil HD5860 has a powerful 13-amp motor which allows the saw to make fast and smooth cuts through various sizes of stock and at varying angles such as 45, 60 and 90 degree angles. The dual front sight of the Skil hd5860 helps you guide the saw along your marked line when cutting at these various angles as well.

Coming back to the motor of the Skil HD5860. The unit has a die-cast aluminium motor and gear housing for extensive durability and durable precision machined worm drive gears for maximum tool life.

The Skil HD5860 also has an oil indicator level with an easy to access oil refill port to ensure the machine operates at the correct level of lubrication at all times thus increasing the life-span of the unit.

The rear handle on the unit helps nicely with the following through of the cut and the aircraft grade aluminium foot glides smoothly over the surface of the material that is being cut. If you do not already know Skil is actually a product of the Bosch Tool Corporation so the quality of Skil in general is excellent.

Overall the Skil HD5860 is money well spent if you are looking for a 8-1/4 inch wormdrive circular saw. Some of the reviews of the people who have bought the saw areas follows:

“5 out of 5 Stars” – Skil 8-1/4″ saw, July 5, 2010 By pchev “P C Bristol”- Amazon Verified Purchase

This review is from: Skil HD5860 22 Amp 8-1/4-Inch 60-Degree Worm Drive Saw
I just received this saw last week to help cut 6×6 RR ties. I’m splicing 10 together to make a base for a shed I’m building. I’ve had to make 6 four foot long cuts on both sides of the timbers and then make a cut at the shoulder so I can splice the timbers together. Long story short, this saw blade was buried to full depth and I pushed through the length of the cut with almost no slowing of blade rotation. I can’t understand why some of the reviews were less than 5 stars, but for just straight cuts I don’t see how any other saw would do better. It makes me wonder if some expectations aren’t maybe a little high for a piece of equipment like this.
The only real drawback would be weight, but in this case that goes hand in hand with the quality, and it wasn’t unexpected.
On the whole I wish all my tool purchases were this happy. The price was right too.

I just bought the 8 1/4 inch saw today. I immediately went to the shop and started cutting. We are making Curly Maple Pencil Post beds for an upcoming show. Using 3 inch / 12/4 curly hard maple for the post and needed to cut them out of a plank. I think this thing thought it was cutting butter as it made the cuts without effort. I love my wife but I think she has competition now. Do not tell her that or I am in big trouble. I so far see no problems with it. By the way No it does not cut 4 inch material unless it gets flipped over.

A quick glance at the features of the new Bosch 4100 09 table saw

•With the Bosch 4100 09 table saw the Bosch award winning Gravity-Rise Stand (TS3000) is included with the unit. This stand is a real dream to operate whether at home or on your work-site. It is highly portable with a great set of 8″ pneumatic wheels that handle any terrain with ease. The stand is very durable and you can setup and take down the stand very quickly and with no real effort. Many people collapse the stand with the saw still attached for neat storage in small places and for transporting.

•This 15 amp 10-inch unit delivers constant smooth power while cutting even at high loads thanks to Bosch’s Constant Response Circuitry. This technology monitors the power and delivers more torque when needed when load increases while cutting. The Soft Start technology also allows the Bosch 4100 09 table saw to operate smoother and quieter than other brands of table saws.

•Bosch’s new Smart Guard System is a great new safety feature with a quick and easy-to-use modular blade guard, anti-kickback pawls and riving knife. As mentioned all 3 of these elements are modular and require no tools to remove or add either of them when needed. The newly designed blade guard that works independently to one another is new system that provides superior control over the material while cutting and offers maximum protection when using the unit.

•This unit includes the standard precision machined aluminium Squarelock™ Rip Fence which has been engineered for maximum trueness and rugged durability. The fence effortlessly glides along the rail at a finger’s touch or locks into place for solid and consistent cutting performance.

•The Bosch 4100 09 Table Saw has a large 29 x 21.5inch Machined Aluminum Tabletop , actually the largest in it’s class and will handle larger stock/timber for a increased ripping capacity.

•Another great feature is the On-tool storage for all saw attachments and tools. There is storage on the unit for the Smart Guard System, Fence and Miter Gauge, and Push Stick.

This review is from: Bosch 4100-09 10-Inch Worksite Table Saw with Gravity-Rise Stand

I had been looking for quite a long time to get a first table saw. Space in the garage is limited, but I wanted a nearly full size table saw with the capability of being able to move it into the house, driveway or backyard as needed for various projects. I considered used saws and Craftsman’s,Riobi’s, Porter Cable’s, Ridgid’s and DeWalt’s saws but the reviews and features of the Bosch 4100-09 with the Gravity-Rise Stand ($200 plus stand for about $10) and the smart guard system made it the final choice. I waited until I had a 10% off coupon and got 12 months free financing to make the purchase, $494.00. I am very skeptical and doubted that the saw would match its reputation. Wow, it is truly great. My 17-year-old son and I assembled everything by the manual and measured with our square and levels. The smart guard system just snaps in place. The table is flat, the fence is perpendicular and has a solid T in front that clamps in back and front. The blade angle was perfect, but one of the miter gauge stops at 45 degrees could be improved slightly. The stand is robust and weighs 41.5 lbs. All together at around 100 lbs the saw and stand feel very stable. My initial cuts were very accurate and sliding and setting the fence for accurate cuts is easy to do. I am very pleased with this saw. It folds up and stores against the wall right next to the tool chest. I am happily surprised that it does live up to its reputation!”

High-quality build. Simple and almost effortless to collapse and move. Aside from calibrating the rip fence, it was tuned beautifully right out of the box. I am very happy. I have been using a Bosch sliding compound miter saw for about 4 years, love it, and this table saw should pair nicely with it…”

This review is from: Bosch 4100-09 10-Inch Worksite Table Saw with Gravity-Rise Stand

I own two “portables”, this unit and the DeWalt DW745. The Bosch is as close to a big shop saw as you can get that allows you to easily fold up and pop in the back of the truck. The DeWalt is great for extreme portability but it is a couple of steps below the Bosch in precision. The Bosch has a fence that is fabulous. It’s easy to adjust and so solid and secure. The T-slot miter slides like it runs on ball-bearings. This gauge is the best I’ve seen on any portable – it isn’t even close. The motor is very powerful which allows you to rip 2x stock effortlessly. The Gravity-rise stand really works and is a snap to erect or knock down. In addition, the wide foot print of the stand really gives a sense of secure stability. The table is a great size and stock floats on it like its riding on air…”

“5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny paid for it, January 2, 2008
By Ms. Patricia K. Harris (Wisconsin)

This review is from: Bosch 4100 10-Inch Worksite Table Saw

I am new at woodworking, but this is my third table saw. I read all the reviews I could find on the internet about the different table saws available. Not too many on the 4100, but a lot on the 4000. Figured if that was a great saw, this upgrade could only be better. Assembly of the smart guard system was a dream. No tools needed. Every part lines up exactly where it is supposed to be. No adjustment needed. The smooth table is so much better than the grooved table I had on my other saws. The accuracy of the cut is phenomenal. I make furniture for Barbie dolls. The first pieces I cut from this saw came out exact, making assembly a breeze with only finished sanding required. No sanding to make the pieces fit correctly. I thought that the on saw storage would not be really useful. However, I was wrong. What a great idea by Bosch!!! No more looking for mislaid pieces. The instruction manual was great. I learned more about using the table saw from a couple of pages in this manual than I did from all of the other reading I had done. Thank you Bosch and Amazon, you have made my life a lot easier and more fun. (Wish the table saws were as quiet as my scroll saw, though.) Patricia”

” 5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful saw for someone tight on space, January 9, 2008
By Futurestock (Indiana, USA)

This review is from: Bosch 4100 10-Inch Worksite Table Saw

As someone who makes exacting cuts, has very little space, and demands high quality tools, I have been happy with the Bosch 4100 table saw so far. I did a lot of research before making a decision. First I wanted a compact saw, but still wanted to stay within the contractor grade saw & motor rather than the typical compact=cheap saw. Next, my saw absolutely had to have a fence that didn’t move 1/16″ to 1/4″ as it was tightening. This saw accomplishes all of this. In my experience, saws didn’t get beyond the fence problem until they passed the $300-$400 mark. I am happy that Bosch paid attention to a lot of little things about this product. The fence, blade guard, anti-kickback pawls, and miter guage all stow pretty neatly under the saw’s table. The cord wraps up nicely around the provided pegs. The fence tightening handle is out of the way and doesn’t catch the operator in the stomach as one walks around it. I wanted a saw that included modern safety mechanisms and whose safety features were such that I wouldn’t be bothered by them and tempted to remove them all the time. I have gotten along well with all of these attachments and feel a lot better having the riving knife behind the blade to prevent it from grabbing a hold of a board and throwing it at me. Only for narrow cuts, 1/2″ or less do I find myself needing to remove the pawl and frequently the guard can remain in place with one side lifted to its high position thereby clearing the fence altogether and leaving the other side of the blade covered. Having previously *always* measured from the blade, I wasn’t expecting much from the onboard ruler. To my surprise, this is very accurate and reliable. I still measure from the blade for very exacting cuts (less than 1/10th of an inch precision) but normally a cut like that goes to the jointer to bring it to spec. I am impressed with the “backwards” ruler that you use when you are extending the table. For those who haven’t see this, it is a different scale that gives you a reading as the fence is in the proper place and you are sliding out the right side extension. I like the soft start motor. It doesn’t dim the lights and pull maximum amps when it is powered on. Instead, it spins up a little more gently. The motor has good power. An 8 foot rip cut on a 2″ walnut piece went without much effort. It makes very smooth cuts for me most of the time. I am able to cut much closer to the final size than with my previous setup; thereby wasting less….”

The Bosch 4000 09 Table Saw with gravity rise wheeled stand has had many favorable reviews and has been the top seller in it’s category for a while now. The Bosch 4000 09 Table Saw will handle jobs that you thought was meant only for bigger saws and it feels quite at home doing so. It is very convenient to use whether at home or on your worksite as it is completely portable and very easy to move around on all terrain types as it has excellent wheels on the gravity rise stand. It is also very easy to setup and collapse when needed to quickly move around.

The table top work surface is quite large and smooth on the Bosch 4000 09 Table Saw. When you extend the built-in extension rails you can cut even bigger sheet materials and the table top handles the weight distribution very well. If further supports or extensions are needed you can purchase auxiliary left and rear side supports which are available for the unit.

The fence is lockable on the front and back and has fluid motion and can be removed or fitted effortlessly. It is also stored on the base of the unit and has a magnifying lens for accurate settings. On the Bosch 4000 09 Table Saw the miter guage is much more sturdier than what comes normally with other table saws, it is longer and therefore more stable, as with the fence the miter guage stores neatly on the base of the unit.

Startup of the Bosch 4000 Table Saw is smooth and operates quieter than most saws even under full load. The Constant Response Circuitry that is a patent of Bosch allows the unit to distribute the power equally even under heavy load so to deliver a constant smooth speed while cutting. On some table saws with direct drive you can experience vibration while cutting. On the Bosch 4000 Table Saw this is not the case and many were most impressed with the zero vibration.

The Bosch 4000 09 Table Saw is actually an ideal all rounder and not just intended as a worksite saw. The home hobbyist and diy’ers will love it and it’s easy-to-use portability definitely makes it a winner. There is over 125 reviews on this saw and is rated 5 stars by many so it is without a doubt money well spent.
